Maths for Love

This story is yet another example of the power of data.

How a Math Genius Hacked OkCupid to Find True Love.

“I think that what I did is just a slightly more algorithmic, large-scale, and machine-learning-based version of what everyone does on the site,” McKinlay says. Everyone tries to create an optimal profile—he just had the data to engineer one.

You can’t engineer attraction and chemistry between two persons, but what he did was essentially just lowering the odds of meeting a suitable mate. One might rebuff by saying he could just as well have met someone if he had spent the same amount of time socialising with real human beings. But that’s the thing – to each his own. We harness our gifts (in Mckinlay’s case, his maths prowess) in different ways to attract potential beau. Cynicism aside, I for one applaud his ingenuity and dedication.
